Proyecto Alas..."Project Wings"
Building New Hope has watched its chavalitos shift from the streets of Granada or the dirt road barrios to become young adults with dreams for a future. They attended our schools and took part in our projects in past years. Now they are allowing their minds to open wide and are beginning to think “outside of the box.”
Project Alas became a way to help the Chavalos continue to grow intellectually and to participate in a larger world outside of their own.
Proyecto Alas provides
- annual scholarships so that those in financial need can attend and complete high school.
- an opportunity to travel throughout Nicaragua to learn about their country’s rich culture, natural resources and history.
- volunteer opportunities to give of themselves to others in need. After the devastating hurricanes of 2005, four Chavalos traveled to our sister community of Nueva Esperanza in El Salvador, to lend their muscle to the massive cleanup project.
- career presentations by area professionals who lend insight into possibilities that exist for their futures. A sports journalist, an architect, a pilot, a computer science professor, and a psychologist have challenged the Chavalos to step outside of their perceived limits and to reach for their dreams.
