“It is amazing how a small group of dedicated people can make such a large impact on helping the less fortunate. As we go about our daily lives and live securely in a wasteful society, we forget what it is like elsewhere. Maybe without seeing first hand what exists in this world, we avoid the inequalities.”

How You Can Help

Inspired by the creativity of so many supportive friends from all over the world, Building New Hope has always been a volunteer-driven organization. From Pittsburgh, PA, our organization’s home, to Granada, Nicaragua, where we carry out our mission, we are able to respond to the needs of the Central American people — because of people like you.

What YOU can do:

1.  NEW WAYS TO HELP

  • If you are a federal employee, you can support BNH through the 2008 Combined Federal Campaign program. We are a member through the Child Aid International program. Our CFC donation code is 58583.

  • Give an Alternative Gift

Sponsor a teacher, help to provide scholarships, veterinary care, library books, and more, either in your own name or as a gift.

  • Give a gift that keeps on giving: Give a gift to Building New Hope in honor of a birthday, a special thank you, in memory of a loved one, or any special occasion. Let us know and we'll send an acknowledgement. Checks may be sent to Building New Hope, 106 Overton Lane, Pittsburgh, PA 15217.

  • Search the Web

Support Building New Hope every time you do a web search! Use www.goodsearch.com for your Internet searches, and specify Building New Hope as the charity. (Try it!) Or click on the GoodSearch logo in the left-hand margin of any Building New Hope web page, which will take you to GoodSearch and automatically fill in the charity. GoodSearch is powered by the Yahoo search engine.

  • Buy from Amazon

When you buy from Amazon, click through the link on the left-hand side of our web pages, and Building New Hope will receive a percentage.

2.  VOLUNTEER IN NICARAGUA

3.  SUPPORT OUR COFFEE PROJECT

  • Drink our delicious, organic, and rustic shade-grown, better-than-fair-trade coffee from cooperatives in Central and Latin America.  A fair trade price ensures a livable wage for coffee farmers and provides funds for investment in their communities.  Additionally, profits help us develop and support education, health and development projects in Nicaragua and El Salvador.  Click to order online
  • Sell BNH coffee through your school, church or service organization and raise funds for your valuable programs while also assisting Central American farmers. Contact us for fundraising information and wholesale prices.
  • Help us find new outlets – local bakeries, stores, coffee shops, offices are all good places to carry great coffee!
  • Volunteer in Pittsburgh, PA  packaging and delivering coffee, offering
coffee samples and information at some of our larger retail outlets. To get involved in the coffee project email barbara@buildingnewhope.org.

 4.  DONATE AIR MILES

Nicaraguan children sometimes need medical care that is not available in Nicaragua. Building New Hope tries to assist in arranging medical care in U.S. hospitals willing to offer pro bono treatment. Additionally, on occasion, we have been able to bring talented teens and community leaders to the U.S. for training and cultural exchanges.

Air fare from Central America to the U.S. can be covered by donors offering frequent flier miles to CAREFORCE, an organization sponsored by Continental Airlines, (ONLY CONTINENTAL frequent flier miles can be used ). To donate miles for Building New Hope‘s work in helping children in need or for training and building partnerships, please contact rjack@sprintmail.com. It’s a simple email procedure that can make a difference!

5.  DONATE BOOKS TO OUR COMMUNITY LIBRARY

We are seeking children’s literature in Spanish and reference books in all languages. If you can help, contact us for shipping information. Cash contributions also are needed to allow us to purchase books and for library operating expenses.

6.  CONTRIBUTE TO BUILDING NEW HOPE

Our needs are many and they depend on your donations.

  • Donations in any major currency can be made through Paypal.  To donate with your credit card, once in Paypal, go to “Don’t have a Paypal account? Click here.”
  • If you would like an immediate tax receipt, and are donating in U.S. dollars, you can direct your electronic donation through Network for Good.
  • Checks can be sent to Building New Hope, 106 Overton Lane
    Pittsburgh, PA 15217.

Some other examples:

  • Students in the U.K. raise money for Building New Hope. Visit their site to learn more.
  • Students in the U.S. collect art and school supplies and Spanish language books for Central American children.
  • Coffee shops, retail stores, and bakeries purchase Nicaraguan coffee through Building New Hope, providing livable wages for farmers and their families. Schools and churches sell our coffee as a service learning project and raise funds for their own educational programs.
  • Medical supplies from visiting doctors and health care organizations support small remote clinics.  Donations of vitamins go to street kids and our barrio schools.
  • Computers for training courses offer women employment opportunities and children a way to learn.
  • Cash donations provide for never-ending necessities such as teachers’ salaries, educational field trips for children, medical emergencies and the development of new projects.  Through contributions, we provide nutritional meals for the children at our learning centers, staff an animal spay clinic to improve community health, and operate a local library.
  • Coffee sales help fund community organizing and income generating projects for women in rural El Salvador, and allow us to respond to emergencies such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods.
  • Donated lab supplies created a first-of-its kind chemistry lab in a neighborhood high school.
  • Every year we provide uniforms, school supplies, and tuition costs for children who want to attend school but, without funding, would never see the inside of a classroom.  Many donors continue to support students year after year, guaranteeing that they’ll see their graduation day!
